“Vigilance”

I think often about how horses sit at a perplexing juxtaposition of prey and power. As textbook prey animals, even the snap of a twig is a subtle alarm bell to them. They are programmed to outrun impending doom. That said, if they decide to turn around and fight, they can be vicious. They’re powerful animals. Though they prefer peace, they’re not unwilling to fight for it. And when you see a horse snap its head up with forward ears and wide eyes, you know she is making decision: fight or flight; that is the delicate balance of vigilance.
