This idea came to me while I hummed “The Old Gray Mare” lyrics, a song my maternal grandmother used to sing under her breath. It reminded me of how when young women grow up and start holding their ground, authority figures often wonder out loud, “What happened to the sweet girl you used to be?”
What happened? I suppose the girls finally gave themselves permission to pin their ears.
